Introduction

In the summer of 2021, a group of 20 young girls who had experienced a crisis pregnancy came together with three local artists to use different mediums of art to reclaim their identity and find their voice. These girls had previously experienced powerlessness and hopelessness, as many had kept their pregnancies “secret” for a long time and did not receive community support. This Art Exhibition provides a platform for them to share their story through art as they invite the community in to learn more about the plight of a pregnant girl’s journey in Hong Kong.

Thanks to the long-standing and generous support of the Pregnant Girls Services at Mother’s Choice by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, we have witnessed how it is possible to positively change the life stories of the many vulnerable pregnant girls in Hong Kong. You have made this transformational work possible, and that is why we sincerely hope that you will join us in experiencing girls’ transformational journey through this online Art Exhibition.

MEET THE THREE LOCAL ARTISTS

Gary Chung

Clive Ka-Lun Lee

Shan Luk

  • Everyone is special and should look for his or her own colors. Gary Chung has long been named as a star makeup artist for many years because he could always highlight and embrace everyone’s unique beauty. Chung’s achievements today ride on his passion and hard work accumulated with time. Having graduated from Stage and Theatre Arts Department from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, as well as obtaining a Master Degree from The Hong Kong Baptist University, Chung has devoted his time in professional makeup, lecturing, writing for his lifestyle column at a local newspaper, and recently cooperating with Mother’s Choice for an exciting art project.

  • Clive Lee is a cross-disciplinary visual artist, a therapist, a social entrepreneur and an educator. Completed his master of arts in visual arts at HKBU, he is currently pursuing his PhD in education at HKU. Clive is the Founder of Phoenix Foundation to promote resilience under COVID 19. He is a senior executive across corporate and social sectors, covering philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, foundation, NGO, social entrepreneurship and public relations. As a humanistic therapist, he is inspired to use art to explore people's suppressed emotions.

Living as an artist, a therapist, a social entrepreneur and an educator, I cherish life as an encountering of love and relationship. Through a humanistic artistic approach, I explore the meanings of life and death, happiness and suffering, as well as attachment and letting go. While my early paintings of abstract expressionism captures moments of emotions reflecting my autistic childhood, negligence, bullying, separation and bereavement as stated in my solo exhibition, “the sculpture of time, people and love”, I later developed a new style in digital arts, experience design and performance art as I recovered from sadness, loneliness and loss through my self-healing process with behavioral health, hypnotherapy and Buddhism.

Now, I found my calling in establishing Phoenix Foundation for promoting resilience against adversity. Resilience means bouncing forward in coping with adversity. Using life stories of my own and many other ordinary people who transformed from adversity, I would love to inspire people to find their real happiness and end their suffering. The positive impacts of death and suffering become my major artistic inspiration.

My award-winning artistic project: “RESILIENCE” recorded my one-year daily experience in 2020 and collected narratives from people about how they faced adversity under the COVID 19 contexts. Inspired by Buddhism’s story of Kisa Gotami and Japanese Shinto’s Oharae ceremony, I transformed the contexts into an experience design in recognizing COVID 19 as our collective experience. The project collected over 800 words from the public to describe their feelings under the pandemic for collective healing.

“Authentic relationship” is my recent socially engaged arts project in a partnership with Mothers’ Choice to invite girls with unintended pregnancy experience to openly share their real feelings, unexpressed emotions, intimate relationships, and inner world with the public by taking pictures of their important encounters and describing them in poetic languages. The digital projections serve as open door to welcome public to go inside their world and experience their vibrant colours and lives.

    「Authentic relationship」

  • To sew and mend is also a process of self-reflecting and healing.

The series of surgery in 2016 were a challenge to both my body and soul, but also inspired me to capture the positive attitude towards the breaking and repairing of imperfect ceramic.

In my solo art exhibition in 2019, I showed the connection between repairing myself and repairing objects. During preparation, through repeated fabrication, intended breaking, and long period of repair, the hidden wound reappears and suffers again, so that it starts to heal.

It is purely my personal interest to explore through glass art and repairing of porcelain as the creative media. As using such media, I realize how they represent the antagonism and complementation between oriental and western culture respectively.

This journey of discovery started off when I was apprenticed to Master Lucio Bubacco for glass art learning in Murano, Venice, and continued by being apprenticed to Master Wang Laoxie for learning of “staple repair”, a repair technique of ancient Chinese porcelain. Master Wang, a signature inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, didn’t only instruct me in repair technique, but also widened my horizons of the Chinese culture I neglected as I grew up in colonial Hong Kong.

Opening the door, I am profoundly inspired by Chinese culture and start studying different porcelain repair techniques, and the aesthetic choice and value difference among different cultures. To my surprise, the exploration of art direction is closely related to my interest in psychology at early age, and the confusion about culture and identify during adolescence.
